Five Solos By Paul Chambers You Should Check Out

Among the virtuosos who have left an indelible mark on the jazz landscape, Paul Chambers stands tall as one of the most influential bassists.

Here’s 5 lesser known solos that I find very interesting, presented in chronological order:

  • "Homework"

From the Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio's self-titled album.

Toshiko Akiyoshi - Piano;

Paul Chambers - Bass;

Ed Thigpen - Drums.

I just recently discovered this record thanks to Kenny Washington’s podcast on KSDS. It’s the first time I have heard Paul Chambers playing with Ed Thigpen, famous for his association with the first Oscar Peterson Trio with drums replacing the guitar.

  • "Straight, No Chaser"

From the album “Miles And Monk At Newport” released in 1964.

Miles Davis - Trumpet;

John Coltrane - Tenor Sax;

Julian “Cannonball” Addeley - Alto Sax;

Bill Evans - Piano;

Paul Chambers - Bass;

Jimmy Cobb - Drums.

I used to listen to this record and in particular to this solo all the time during college, perfect phrasing.

  • "Temperance"

From the album “Kelly At Midnite”.

Wynton Kelly - Piano;

Paul Chambers - Bass;

Philly Joe Jones - Drums.

A classic record if you want to understand this music.

Check out Paul Chambers solo on this!

  • "These Were Soulful Days"

From the album "Leeway" (1960).

Lee Morgan - Trumpet;

Jackie McLean - Alto Sax;

Bobby Timmons - Piano;

Paul Chambers - Bass;

Art Blakey - Drums.

I remember when I received this cd from an online store years ago and I was completely in love with this song and the arrangement. On this one PC takes the first solo!

  • "Mimosa"

From Herbie Hancock's album "Inventions and Dimensions" (1963):

Herbie Hancock - piano;

Paul Chambers - bass;

Willie Bobo - drums, timbales;

Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez - percussion.

A very interesting record of Herbie Hancock and the evidence that Paul Chambers could play also in a different style than usual. Great elegant solo over some very unusual chord changes.
